Association members primarily provide translation and interpreting services. Occasionally they may provide revision, layout, localization, internationalization and proofreading services.

To help you understand these terms, we include a list of the most commonly used terms:

Interpreting services: to transfer oral information from the spoken source language into the target language.
There are three basic types: consecutive and simultaneous interpreting and whispering or chuchotage.
Consecutive interpreting: oral transference of words into another language carried out when the speaker has finished speaking or pauses for interpretation.
Simultaneous Interpreting: It is a process by which what a speaker says is verbally transferred into a second language. It is customary to use equipment such as booths, headphones, receivers, etc.. It is recommended that two people work for each pair of languages and to work for only 30 minutes per turn.
Whispering: It is similar to simultaneous interpreting, but the interpreter sits next to the speaker and he whispers the translation without using any technical equipment.

Translation: To transfer to the target language a document or file which is in the source language.

Review: It is the process of comparing source and target texts, and recommending corrections.
Localization / Internationalization: It is the process of adapting a product (usually done using translation software) so that it can be used at a specific place or country.

Layout: composition and distribution of elements on a page or website using software programs.
Target language: the language to which the source text will be translated or interpreted.

Source language: The language from which the translation or interpreting will be made.
Certified translation: After the translation has been reviewed and guaranteed to be a correct and complete version of the original text, it may be certified. There are two levels of certification depending on client needs. The translation agency can certify a translation as accurate and precise or the translator can do this.
Certified Translator: A person who has passed a certification test for a specific language pair. Such tests can be taken by translators or interpreters, through international organizations (such as ATA) or through ATIEC.
Freelance translator / interpreter: This is a translator who works on his / her own, performing translations or rendering interpreting services for agencies or companies or directly for clients.
